How To Create a HubSpot Campaign - Step-by-Step

27 Apr 2016

Hubspot

Here follows an easy 7 step guide on how to create your own campaign in HubSpot.

No matter if you are a total newbie or a total pro with using HubSpot it's always nice to have a step-by-step guide outlining how to create a campaign.

In this guide you'll learn how to create a campaign; a landing page; a thank you page; a form; a Call-To-Action (CTA); one email and one workflow for automation.
Let's go!

Tip: Start backwards
Why? The various pages are dependant of each other. To save yourself some precious time it's a good idea to start from the end and work yourself backwards.
First step is to create your campaign in HubSpot. Once this is done you'll be able to add all your assets to your campaign which will allow you to measure your success in one place. And to be honest - isn't that what we all want and need? How did our new offer go down? How many sign-ups did we get? How many people want us to reach out to them?

1. Create your campaign
- Ckick 'Content' in the top menu and choose 'Campaigns'
- Click 'Create Campaign', the big blue button up on the right
- Name your campaign and save
Tip: Give your campaign a unique name. This will help you remember later on which campaign is measuring what and what it was all about. Also, the name is only internal so won't be shown publicly anwhere.

Once you've created your campaign, that you'll add your assets to, you can go ahead and create your pages, CTA's, forms etc.
We'll continue from the end - the Thank You page - the last thing from your campaign your visitors will see.

2. Thank You Page - In this (and following) steps we will cover how to create a page from scratch
- Click 'Content' again, but this time choose 'Landing Pages'
- Click 'Create a new landing page', the big blue button up to the right
- Now you'll see templates to choose from. Don't be afraid! Look through them and choose the one you think would work best for the purpose of the campaign and click it
- Name your Thank You Page. This is only the internal name so be as clear as possible eg. 'Campaign name - Thank You Page'
- Now you can start adding your content. WHen you feel happy with the end result go to 'Settings' in the menu on top of your page.
- Under 'Settings' you'll choose the title, name your URL, meta-description (the description of your page on the Search Engine Results page). You also choose to add your page to your campaign (IMPORTANT for measure of success). If you want to you can do more advanced things like custom HTML & CSS
- When you're done under 'Settings' you can choose to publish your page instantly or schedule it to publish at a later stage
- Publish or Schedule by clicking the big blue button up to the right

Well done! You've just created your first (well really the last) page of your campaign. Let us move on still backwards and next step is forms. The forms gives you the possibilty to collect information about your visitors, turning them into leads.

3. Forms
- Click 'Contacts' and choose 'Forms'

- You will now see a list of your existing forms if you have any. You can use one form on multiple pages, but in this step we'll cover how to create a new one
- Click 'Create new', the big blue button - you guessed it - up to the right
- Now you're looking at a standard form with Name, Last Name and Email. Now you need to think about - What do we want/need to know about our potential customers? But also keep in mind - What would I be willing to share about myself for this kind of offer? If it's a big report on a certain industry maybe it's worth sharing a bit more info about yoursell than a 'Contact me' option, right?

When you've created your form you need to create the page where your new form should sit - The Landing Page!

4. Landing Page
Follow step 2, but change Thank You to Landing  when naming your page. Also think about the purpose of the page when choosing the template.
Don't forget that it's under 'Settings' you add your page to the campaign you created in step 1. It's also under 'Settings' you choose if you want to schedule or publish your page instantly. Don't be afraid to publish instantly, no one will be able to see yoru page until you link to anywhere on your website, in emails, bloggposts, social media or anywhere online.

5. Call-To-Action or CTA
- Click 'Content' again but this time you choose 'Call-to-action'
- Create a new CTA by clicking the blue button 'Create a CTA'
- Now you'll get a pop-up with two tabs. One is the information about your CTA the other one is the design of it
- In 'Information' it's important that you link your CTA to a page and also choose the campaign you created in tep 1. Now we guess you're starting to see the reason why we started backwards. This is where you want to link to your new landing page where the vistitor fills out a form that takes him/her to a Thank You Page. Tada!
- Once you've linked your CTA and you're happy with the design you click 'Create CTA' down to the right in the pop-up
Great job! Now you've created your CTA. Let's continue with the second to last step.

6. Email
- Click 'Content' and this time choose 'Email'
- You can choose to clone an email that's been successful but now we'll create a new one. So click 'Create New Email'
- You now have to choose your template that suits your purpose. Do you want to include images? Is it just going to be an info-email? What do you want to say? Is it an offer? Does the recipient get to download something?
- Choose your template and name your email. Again - it's only named for internal purposes so choose a name that's unique and relevant to the email. This will help you know exactly what this email was about in the future
- Create your email by choosing who it's sent from, what is the reply-to email? And finally add your content. Once you've done that go to 'Settings'  and add your meail to the campaign you created in step 1. You also need to choose what type of email this is and if you want to offer a web version of your email (recommened)
- Next step is to choose 'Recipients'. Now you decide if you want to send this to a specific list or if you want to automise it, which means if someone carries out a certain action it will send it automatically to that person. And that is what next step is all about - the automation of workflows.

7. Autoated Workflow
- Click 'Contacts' and choose 'Workflows'
- Click 'Create new workflow'
- Name your workflow, and remember this namem is for internal use only but it's important You know which workflow this is. Eg. 'Campaign name'. Ifi you create multiple workflows under one campaign just be very clear on that when naming your workflows.
- Click 'Create new Workflow' down to the left
- Now you need to choose what will trigger your workflow. Is it if somone ills out your form? Is it if a person has click your CTA? Is it if somone visits your landing page? Think of what You want to happen in this workflow. By defining the end goal we're sure you'll see what should trigger the start of this workflow
- When you've chosen what triggers the start of your workflow you choose more activities. Will an email be sent? Maybe the meail you just created? You can also choose to delay activities. That's great to use if you have a workflow with multiple emails to be sent out. Good to think about as well is - How would I react if I filled out this form/clicked this CTA/entered this page och received an email straight after that/a day after/a week after?

Add as many steps in your workflow as you deem fit and relevant. You do not want to scare your new contacts away by making them feel like you're 'spamming'. But you don't want to loose them by too few touch points either. You want to give them something of value so they'll return and eventually become a customer of yours.
Tip: One action in your workflow can be to add the person to a list, eg. a newsletter list. In that way you keep your new leads and they can make the decision themselves - when they think they're ready - to contact you.

In the next blog post of our HubSpot-How-To series we'll cover how to measure the success of your campaign.

Good luck!
